Transformative Agreements

“Transformative agreement” is an umbrella term that encompasses those agreements negotiated between institutions (libraries, national and regional consortia) and publishers. With these agreements, subscription expenditures are repurposed to support Open Access publishing, thus transforming the business model of scholarly journal publishing. The goal is ultimately to shift from a model based on toll access (subscription) to one in which publishers are remunerated a fair price for their open access publishing services. (Further reading at ESAC Registry).

The University of Regina Library is participating in two transformative agreements negotiated by CRKN with SAGE and the Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). University of Regina researchers are able to publish (at no cost) an unlimited number of articles with Open Access SAGE Choice journals and receive a 40% discount on article processing charges for SAGE’s gold Open Access journals. The Institute of Physics agreement allows for Open Access publishing in most IOPP hybrid and gold journals at no charge.

Additionally, the following article processing charges discounts are part of our agreements with several publishers:

  • American Chemical Society (ACS): $250 USD discount
  • Canadian Science Publishing: 50% discount
  • Elsevier: 20% discount
  • Journal of agriculture, food systems, and community development: No article processing charges (APC)
  • Taylor & Francis: 25% discount
