Dmytro Stryjek Donation

The Dr. John Archer Library & Archives recently received a generous donation of 262 unique pieces of art by the late Dmytro Stryjek from his granddaughter, Judy Harris. Born in 1899 in Ukraine, Stryjek moved to Hafford, SK in 1923. After his retirement from the Canadian National Railway in 1965, he began drawing and painting in earnest, inspired by the religious imagery of the Ukrainian church and by his own naturally curious mind. Stryjek’s colourful folk art can be found in collections all across Canada.

Dmytro passed away in 1991 in Saskatoon, SK. Heartfelt thanks to Ms. Harris for this amazing donation.

“The support from the U of R libraries, especially Mary Chipanshi, has been invaluable for my community research and for both my graduate and undergraduate students. The wealth of knowledge that our librarians have is beyond amazing. Having the chance for students to gethands-on support as they learn skills and apply these skills to real-world challenges facing our Saskatchewan community; working in na tangible way to create evidence informed recommendations; and to even consider library sciences as a potential career trajectory is outstanding and a true testament to the talent and expertise we have at the Dr. John Archer Library.”
