The Dr. John Archer Library & Archives hosted a public Aboriginal storytelling event on February 14, 2023. The storyteller, Métis and Cree Elder Jane Carriere, was born in Sturgeon Landing-Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and was raised in Cumberland House Cree Nation. Elder Jane is a retired nurse, beader, and entertainer. She described important moments in her life while experiencing racist government policies on Indigenous people and culture.
This event was part of a province-wide initiative of storytelling programs that occurred in many types of cultural and learning centres, community organizations, and libraries across Saskatchewan. The Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed February as Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month. The Library Services for SK Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP) Committee manages the program and 2023 marked its 20th anniversary. 2023 was also the Library’s 7th year of participating in the month-long program.
