Spectacle, Sport and Story: Picturing the 1936 Olympics


The University of Regina Archives & Special Collections participated in Archives Week 2010. For the event "From the Vault: Archives on the Big Screen", a short video was produced: Spectacle, Sport and Story: Picturing the 1936 Olympics presents stories from the 1936 Winter and Summer Olympics using materials from the Archives' holdings as well as other sources.

Archives Week 2010


Saskatchewan Archives Week 2010 is the 5th annual Archives Week held in Saskatchewan. Starting Monday, February 1 there are many events throughout the province. A complete calendar of events can be found on the website of the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists.

The Video


The video covers 10 sports or classes of sports (1-10), and the opening and closing ceremonies (iii and iv). These are prefaced with information about the Winter Games held in Garmisch-PartenKirchen and the Summer games held in Berlin (i). As well, described are the core materials and inspiration for the video (ii), the "1936 Olympics trading cards" from the Theodore Allen Heinrich fonds 89-44. The video has a playing time of 8 minutes and 4 seconds (8:04).
